Choosing the Right Home Preschool Curriculum for Toddlers

Preschool Curriculum for Toddlers 1Tonight I was browsing the Internet for some fun activities to keep my toddler entertained during the day so that he isn’t spending countless hours in front of the television.  I was impressed with the amount of information that I was able to find when I searched for free home preschool curriculum.  In fact, I was somewhat overwhelmed by the amount of material  that I found online and I am not exactly sure where I want to begin.  He has been going to daycare and they have already started teaching him some basic material.  I found a bunch of materials that is free to print and use.  If you want a strict program, there are packets that you can download each year for a nominal free.  Teaching hasn’t always been my natural gift and talents but I know how important it is to teach my son and give him activities to keep him from getting bored.

Disclosure:  The opinions in this post are my own and I was not compensated for this post.

I have a general idea in my head and wanted to come up with a schedule that would allow me to have the time to work on other projects and manage to keep my son entertained.  I am not sure if my schedule will work out as planned but I will give it a try and see how it works out for me and my son.  I want to continue teaching him new things so that he is ready for Kindergarten in a few years.  I will be adding a new section on my blog and will share some of our daily activities on my blog.  I also want to include some Christian/Biblical stories and bible time into my daily lesson plan.

My estimated schedule for preschool:

6 am to 8:30 – work on my blog or networking while reclining on the couch

8:30 to 9:00 – breakfast

9:00 to 11:00 – craft, lessons, and learning activities

11:00 – 12:00 – watch Sesame Street or another educational program

12:00 – lunch

12:30 to 2:30 – nap time – I plan on laying down resting/networking/social media/blog while reclining on the couch

2:30 – Snack time

2:40 to 5:00 – bible time, free play, music time, playing outside (weather permitting), coloring, play with play-dough, ect

This will be a learning experience for me and I am thankful that I have the opportunity to enjoy spending time with my son.  I am unable to work a traditional job due to my physical limitations.  I am thankful that my son is a bit more independent now so that I no longer have to constantly pick him up or carry him around the house.  At this point he wants to be independent and do things for himself.

Do you home school your child?  How do you find new curriculum for your child without spending a bunch of money?

Christy, you are a ROCK STAR MOMMY!!!! (and wife also!!! and friend also!!!) 🙂 It is so refreshing to read your articles as your dedication to doing the best you can each day for and with your family BRIGHTLY SHINES through your articles. I know the initial transition of having your son home may require some “scheduling transitions and tweaking” depending on how every day is different although I know there will be so many added benefits for the both of you. As you know, it is a GREAT blessing you are dedicated to building in Christian values and curriculum for your children and family. Cheers to you for ALL you do for your family and others, XO, Steph~

Yes she is a ROCK STAR MOMMY! I should know… I’m married to her :-). I think it is awesome that he gets to stay home with her now and that she is dedicated to continue teaching him.

I just started an at home preschool curriculum with my daughter last week. We are both loving it. I try to fit it in either before lunch or after lunch. Our “class” only lasts around an hour though because she isn’t even two yet. I decided to go with the brightly beaming steps to reading curriculum. It had everything I was looking for plus I don’t have to spend a lot of extra money buying a ton of supplies. It sounds like you have a great schedule worked out. I am sure your little one will enjoy it.

For the most part, I am able to get most of mine done in an hour to an hour and a half, depending on my son’s attention span. You should check out out my list of toddler teaching tools. I found most of the stuff at Target for cheap. Also, you can get stuff from the dollar store too.

Looks like you’ve got everything covered :). Preschool is important in setting the foundation for a lifetime of learning. It’s good that there are free resources on the internet.

Yes an early foundation makes the transition to Kindergarten easier.

That sounds like a great plan! I loved homeschooling and I find I really miss it this year after having done all grades between 3 out of my 4 kids. Enjoy, they grow so fast, it’s great that you’re able to spend that time with him, you’ll make so many memories!

This is my first time homeschooling and I am some what nervous about it. My oldest son asked me yesterday if I was going to continue once my son is ready for Kindergarten. I would consider it. 😉

My little guy is actually in pre-school and I am so thankful for the schedule and program they have him on. I can’t imagine doing it on my own, but if I did this would be very helpful!

When my daughter was young it was really easy to craft a lesson plan for her. She loved to learn. Your schedule looks doable and not too much for a kid to handle. During that time I think I settled on an Abeka curriculum. But the kid was in pre-school. Weighing the choices of Abeka or Montessori, etc. almost drove me nuts, lol. Also have you tried Veggie Tales? Great Christian cartoon.

I love Veggie Tales and my son has watched them some when he was younger. I will have to see if they have episodes on Netflix.
