Foot Print Butterflies

Make a Homemade Foot Print Butterfly Card for Mother’s Day

I wanted to share with you the Foot Print Butterfly Craft that I made with my youngest son on Wednesday afternoon. The bunny’s were a hit a few weeks ago and I wanted to make some more homemade gifts for Mother’s Day. I remember my kids making a cute butterfly when they were a bit younger so I Googled to find a butterfly that looked similar to the ones that my older kids made a one year for me. This craft took roughly 20 minutes to make and it is a great way to preserve your child’s foot prints.

Items Needed:

Construction Paper or Poster Board

Bowl of Water

Paint Brushes

Crayola Washable Paints

Paper Plate or Something Else Suitable for Mixing Paints

Cotton Swab

I laid an old towel on our dining room table to prevent paint from getting on the table. You can also use newspaper if you have some lying around your house.

  1. Pick a piece of colored construction paper.
  2. Paint your child’s right foot using yellow washable paint. Then add colorful dots as desired.
  3. Place your child’s foot down on the left middle side of the paper.
  4. Press down on your child’s foot, especially, the toes so that you get paint on the paper.
  5. Use a wet wipe to clean off your child’s foot.
  6. Paint your child’s left foot using yellow washable paint. Then add colorful dots as desired.
  7. Place your child’s foot down on the right middle side of the paper. Leave enough room between the foot prints so that you can add the butterfly’s belly.
  8. Press down on your child’s foot, especially, the toes so that you get paint on the paper.
  9. Use a wet wipe to clean off your child’s foot.
  10. Carefully, fill in any spots on the butterfly wings that didn’t get enough paint.
  11. Use a pencil to draw the body for the butterfly.
  12. Paint the butterfly’s body using brown paint.
  13. Paint the antennas for the butterfly using black paint. Note: If you don’t have black paint, I personally mixed brown and dark blue to make my own black paint. I also used a cotton swab to draw the antenna.
  14. Allow the paint to fully dry.
  15. Outline the butterfly using a sharpie marker.
  16. Add two eyes using the black sharpie marker.
  17. Add a personalized message for Mother’s Day.
