Why Handwriting Helps you Learn

12 Ways to Get Your Child to Engage in Handwriting + Infographic

Technology is causing a big hindrance for our children. They are no longer writing nearly as much as I did when I was in school. I remember writing a ton of papers by hand because computers weren’t in every home and were considered a luxury until the Internet became popular. As technology continues to evolve, kids will continue spending less time writing and more time typing on computers, tablets, or smart phones.

Today, I wanted to share with you this great infographic that was created by Giraffe Childcare and Early Learning Center.

Why Handwriting Helps you Learn

12 Ways to Get Your Child to Engage in Handwriting

Here are some fun ways to get your child engage in handwriting:

  • Help you write the grocery list or list of chores
  • Write a letter to a pen pal overseas
  • Write their own story
  • Help write out their birthday invitations
  • Practice writing words on the sidewalk
  • Buy them a journal so that they can write down their thoughts and feelings before going to bed
  • Practice writing their favorite things
  • Write their Christmas list
  • Have your child interact with you by writing notes back and forth to each other
  • Have your child write out some top ten lists on a variety of subjects
  • Teach them to write down three concerns and three positives each day
  • Play the sentence game

How do you encourage your child to use their handwriting over technology?

You have a point there. We have become lazy with penmanship because we jump on our computers and type away.

Just the other day I heard that cursive (script) is no longer being taught in some schools n the US. What I want to know is how are they going to sign their names or will that go out of fashion as well–just typing okay on a computer screen. I agree that learning to write helps in every way possible.

Penmanship is important to me, which may sound crazy, but it’s something I harp on when it comes to my babies. I will make them redo their whole paper if they did not get it their best, sloppy or lazy writing doesn’t cut it for me. I just never want us to evolve to a society where writing is dead.
I love to receive handwritten cards and letters, to me those are SO special.

They took handwriting out of our school system completely. They never teach the kids cursive now. My older three were taught, my youngest will be taught by me.

I didn’t know that they took cursive out of school. My oldest is learning it in 7th grade which is crazy. I remember learning it in elementary. Of course, if kids don’t learn how to write in cursive how are they supposed to know how to sign their name and documents.

Handwriting is a big thing in Ecuador and the teachers use a lot of time making sure that the students have good handwriting skills. I agree that it’s necessary but there are other necessary skills too. Here teachers pay so much attention to the form (beautiful writing) that they forget the real meaning of writing, to convey a message. Students have very low creative writing skills here.

Great tips. My 7 year old struggles with handwriting since she is learning all the “rules” now. She really has very limited experience with computer/ipad for now……and I think it helps.

I hope that kids continue learning handwriting in school. I know that my oldest son struggles with writing, it is fairly sloppy. I kinda feel sorry for his teachers.

Those are some good suggestions for encouraging hand writing. These days it seems less and less kids are using handwriting – I knew there seemed to be a decline but those facts in the info graphic really put it into perspective.

I totally agree. The sad part is – it is also true to adults, I for one. ๐Ÿ™

Great suggestions, I struggle with my son with writing whereas my daughter loves to write. He’d rather use a computer and be lazy about it.

The schools no longer teach cursive writing. I need to teach my younger boys this, thanks for the info.
