Find a Personalize Book
Reading to your child is fun and has many other great benefits, plus finding a personalize book with your child’s name it would be a fun surprise when they spot or hear their name. I received a book called : The Little boy Who Lost His Name by David Gadji-Newby. The little boy in the story woke up one morning and couldn’t remember his name. Throughout the story he goes on an adventure in search of his name. Along the way they will meet some magical and wonderful creatures just like we meet a ton of wonderful people in our lives. It is a cute story and at the end of the book my youngest son was surprised to find his name in the book. Each book is customized for your child and I was thrilled when we received a copy of this book about 10 days after I placed the order. They also have a girl’s book too! Purchase a copy of Lost My Name for your child.
Disclosure: I received a free book from Lost My Name to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own and may differ from mine.
Teach your Child to Write Their Name
Take it a step further and teach your child how to write their name. Your child will also have to know how to do this before they enter kindergarten and there are a ton of free preschool activities online to help your child learn how to write their name. They will need to know how to distinguish between upper and lower case letters too. This is something that I plan on working with my youngest son over the next year, he is only 3 but I want him to be prepared for kindergarten so that he doesn’t struggle or be behind his peers when he goes off to school.
Teaching your child how to say and recognize their name is not only a requirement for kindergarten but it is also for your child’s own safety. It can help your child in an emergency situation or if they get separated from you in the store ( I remember I used to hide in the clothes rack at department stores when I was younger and it would scare my mom because she couldn’t find me). If your child gets lost, they will be able to tell another person what their name is so that they could possible get help. However, you also should teach your child about stranger danger but that is another post for another day.
How did you teach your child their name?

I don’t have any children but now I am wondering–how in the heck did my Mom get me to remember my full name–it is quite a mouthful!
I don’t know how my mom did it either. My youngest is cute when he tries to say my name. 😉
Great tips! I remember teaching my son his full name. And also my name and his fathers name. It’s such an important thing to know.
I agree. Thank you for visiting.
great tips! thank you so much. we are working on it and I really like the personalize book idea. I’ll make ascrapbook of his photos and create a story out of them mentioning his name often.
I really like the scrapbook idea. It would be fun going through old photos with your child too.
My son’s name is quite long, and he used to complain about it. Haha! He still does, but only during exams when he has to write his full name on the answer sheet.
I always wished that I had a short name too. Those bubble sheets weren’t fun. 😉
This is really great I like the craft idea because it gets there creative juices associating it with thier identity
For both my kids I used the spelling of the name and put it to song. I didn't use a song they knew, just made up my own rhythm. I did that with our phone number too. It really helped. My son still sings my phone #.
