6 Reasons Why it is Important to Maintain Your A/C Unit and Furnace

Has your air conditioner ever gone out in the middle of the summer when it happens to be over 100 degrees outside? Thankfully, we haven’t had this happen to us but this past summer our air conditioner was running non-stop for several hours. During the middle of the afternoon, our a/c system was struggling to maintain a comfortable temperature in our house. So I phoned our trusted a/c repair man to come out and take a look at our air conditioner. Today, I am sharing 6 reasons why it is important to maintain your A/C Unit and furnace. Don’t forget to schedule an appointment soon.

Get an Annual Tune Up

Your air conditioner usually sets dormant for several months during the cooler months. While your air conditioner is sitting dormant, it collects dust and debris on the air conditioner coils. The dust and debris can cause your air conditioner to have to work harder to cool your home. I typically schedule a tune up in the early spring so that I can make sure that our air conditioner is prepared for our harsh summers. Your a/c repair man will come out and thoroughly examine your air conditioner and check the condition of your unit. If they see something wrong, they can fix the problem before it is super hot outside and even top off your Freon levels.

It’s very important to choose a reliable and experienced service provider, summersphc.com/la-porte/services/heating/furnace-tune-up/ have an excellent record if you are looking for a service provider in the LaPorte area.

Change Your Filters

You should always change your air filters on a regular schedule. A dirty air filter can reduce the air flow in your home and make your air conditioner work harder to cool your home. Plus, a dirty filter increases the number of allergens and dust in your home which could lead to childhood asthma or increase allergy symptoms. Depending on the type of filter you unit has, you may need to change it monthly or every 3 to 6 months.

Extend the Life of Your A/C Unit

Regular maintenance and servicing by professional HVAC Services in Beaumont, CA, or a company near you, can help extend the life of your a/c unit.  A new unit could end up costing you several thousand dollars. Plus, it helps makes it run more efficiently too.

Check for Holes in Duct Work

While our a/c repair man is in our attic, he always checks our duct work for problems. Faulty duct work can cause your a/c system and heater to work harder. He might not be able to see a small pinhole in the duct work but he is looking for possible damage from rodents in your attic.

Clean the Return Air Vent

Make sure that you clean the return air vent frequently. If the return air vent is clogged with dirt, it can make your home look dirty and pull more dirt through the ventilation system. I usually use my broom to clean it and then vacuum it up because I have high ceilings that make cleaning with a vacuum cleaner attachments too difficult.

Take Care of Hot and Cold Spots in Your Home

The front two rooms in our home are warmer in the summer and colder in the winter time. This was frustrating considering we bought our home brand new. About three years ago, we had our a/c technician look at the duct work to the two rooms to determine why there was such a huge difference in overall temperature. He determined that they didn’t choose the right size duct work for the rooms. So he added two additional vents to try and push more air to those rooms.

Winter is coming up soon so don’t forget to schedule your fall furnace tune up soon. Then next spring, you should schedule a second tune up on your a/c unit for maximum performance and to help save you money on your electric bill.
