Back to School: Keeping Your Child Healthy This Fall

Fall brings bonfires, football games, and long nights curled up by the fire playing games with the family. However, it also means it’s back to school time, and this can bring many illnesses and germs into your home. Luckily, there are quite a few tips out there that can help you avoid the sickness that often comes with the fall season and the little ones going back to school. 

Take the Kids for Regular Checkups

The more often you take your child in for regular dental and general checkups, the easier it will be to find any problems before they become serious issues.  

Make Sure Your Kids Take Their Vitamins 

The correct amount of vitamins and minerals is extremely important to the health of your school-age children during the fall season and into the frigid winter months as well. From calcium to Vitamin D and from Vitamin C to the much-needed B Vitamins, a good multi-vitamin can help to strengthen your child’s immune system and help keep them from contracting the many illnesses that fall brings with it. 

Dress Appropriately for Fall Weather 

Dressing a child to go to school during the fall can be super-tricky. It can be cold one day and hot the next, so it’s hard to know how to dress your child sometimes. Consider dressing your child in layers, as the weather often starts out chilly in the morning and becomes hot in the afternoon. Also, refrain from allowing your child to wear shorts to school once September ends,  just to be on the safe side. 

Don’t Send Your Kids to School When They Are Sick

One of the worst mistakes you can make is sending your child to school when they are sick. Just because they have Tylenol in their system and their fever is normal, it doesn’t mean they aren’t contagious. There are certain things to look for when determining if your child is too sick to send to school, you can find a few of those things here. The rule of thumb is not to send your child to school if they have a fever that is more than 101 degrees Fahrenheit. That is up to you as a parent, however, because it’s hard to learn when you’re sick. 

Proper Hygiene is Super Important

Whether your child is just starting kindergarten or entering high school, one of the safest ways to protect them from sickness is by teaching them about proper hygiene. They should always wash their hands before eating, after sneezing and use health precautions to avoid catching the flu that circulates every fall and winter season. Be sure to teach them proper hygiene is the first step in preventing illnesses from entering your home and making your entire family sick. 

A Set Sleep Schedule Helps

A child that is not getting enough sleep is not only going to be cranky, but their immune system won’t work as well, making it easier for them to become sick. If you want your child to stay healthy and do well in school, a set sleep schedule is key to success.
