Black Night By SJ Strayhorn

Black Night by S.J. Strayhorn

Lena visits a local sandwich shop in town and discovers that Ross just fired his only two workers for having a relationship while on the job.  Since Lena is only going to be in town temporarily, she figures that she is the perfect person to take the job until he is able to hire regular help.  Lena notices that the boy down the street is constantly staring at her each time she goes outside the house.  Rafael was released from prison and returned to live at his mother’s home.  Lena later finds out that he was a convicted conman and that he was recently released from prison.

Rafael is having a hard time finding a job and there is a group of people that are constantly harassing him for his past mistakes.  When he finds himself being accused of another murder in town and he is brought down to the police station for questioning.  After being questioned, it was apparent that he wasn’t involved in the killing.  One day, Rafael finds himself at the local sandwich shop where Lena was just hired.  The shop owner decides to give Rafael a chance and allows him to start working.

Lena isn’t the type of person that is too fond of men or relationships but something in Rafael peaks her interest.  Eugenia quickly realizes that Lena is falling in love with Rafael and she realizes that history is about to repeat itself.  Lena is pretty mean to Rafael at first and tries to keep her feelings at bay.  However, she finds herself attracted to him and towards the end of the story she realizes that she does in fact love him.  When Eugenia and Lena, have to return to their hometown, Rafael is afraid of letting Lena go.  Rafael can’t leave the area due to his own parole restrictions and hopes that Lena will stay with him.

Eugenia speaks to the sandwich shop owner and learns that he knows what happened to one of Eugenia’s long lost friends.  She brings out a lot of memories for Ross and Ross now has to confront some of his past mistakes.  Ross finds two of his old childhood buddies that knew what happened to one of Eugenia friends when she was growing up.  He finds out that her childhood friend was in fact killed and her murder was covered up.

I really don’t want to give away too much more of this book so that you will be interested in reading it for yourself.  This book is full of suspense and keeps you guessing what will happen next.  Strayhorn is an excellent writer and keeps the story constantly moving.  There was never a dull moment.  I highly recommend that you check out this great read.

Christy, I only wish that I had some time to read for just me! When I do get the chance, I enjoy reading time travel novels. Nice review, and my hubby is a huge mystery reader as well.

I wish I had more time to read. I usually read for about an hour before bed unless I am sick or exhausted. 🙂 Your husband might enjoy this book.

Sounds like a great read. I love the elements of suspense you mentioned. It sounds really good, also, because I love plots where characters overcome some sort of fear or past difficulties.

(Don’t be too hard on yourself, by the way, about having less time to read. 🙂 Glad to see you’re back!!)

Yeah, summer time is so busy so maybe once the kids are back in school and I have my routine back, I will have a bit more time to read.

I acquire books faster than I can read them, usually from a good review by someone whose opinion I respect. I haven’t found a solution yet to the backlog; I’ll just keep chipping away at the pile. Your review was enticing, Christy!

I have also found that ebooks are easier to read. I have several apps on my phone that allow me to read ebooks without taking up a bunch of room on my bookshelves.

OOOH sounds like a good one. I find the only time I read is when I am waiting in my kids room for them to fall asleep – wish I could do it more!
