Is it Safe to Use a Baltic Amber Teething Necklace to Reduce Teething Symptoms?

SAFETY KNOTTED Honey - Certified Baltic Amber Baby Teething NecklaceWhen your child starts teething, typically around 4 to 6 months of age, your baby will probably be pretty miserable until their teeth emerge from their gums. In fact, it can make your baby pretty grumpy and irritable. I remember going through this phase with all three of my own children and I found the frozen teething rings to be one of their favorite thing to chew on to soothe their swollen gums. As a mom, I always strive to do my best to to make my baby feel better and make their pain go away. Over the last few years, I have seen other parents buying their baby the amber teething necklaces in hopes of making their baby more comfortable. I wanted to research and share my opinion about Amber Teething Necklaces.  I haven’t personally used the teething amber necklace on any of my kids, so I can’t tell you how well it works or if it works at all. Of course, as a chronic pain suffer it has me curious if it really helps with pain.

What is an Baltic Amber Teething Necklace?

It is a comfortable beaded necklace that is made from Amber. It is thought to have healing powers when it is worn while you are feeling pain or discomfort. According to Wikipedia, amber is known as a healing agent in folk medicine. The necklaces are made of Baltic Amber. Baltic amber is known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. If you don’t want to give your child an excessive amount of medications or teething gels or tablets, this seems like a logical option to try on your baby. The necklace supposedly works by using your child’s body heat to warm up the necklace and it emits small amounts of essentials oils. The oils are absorbed into the skin. I have heard some mom’s comments on my Baby Center forum that swear that it helped remedy their child’s teething symptoms.

Your welcome Ashley. Have you ever tried using the amber teething necklaces?

We actually got one of these teething necklaces but it was so tight on my Little Man, I didn’t use it. I have friends who use it, but their baby teethed the same as mine…

Thank you for sharing LaVonne. They are a good idea in theory but they pose too many risks to use in my opinion.

Great post! I actually had a baltic amber necklace for my son, didn’t do a thing for him. Though I’ll add that he teethed at 3 months and got a bunch at one time, so I’m not sure anything would have helped other than Tylenol. I did worry about it choking him and moved it to his ankle at night.
For my daughter (6 yrs ago, before the amber hype) we used pacifiers filled with ice and frozen. She loved them

Thank you so much for sharing. I bet your baby was miserable when he was getting several teeth in at one time. I personally used Motrin when my youngest was teething because it has better anti-inflammatory properties.
I remember when my youngest was teething, I would rub a very small of tylenol directly to his gums. It seemed to help him some but he loved to chew on his cold teether the best.

I agree that only takes a moment for something to happen. I’ve never really been interested in trying these for the fear of it breaking and one of my kids getting choked.

I agree with your thinking. I am curious to see if it helps relieve some of my pain but I don’t expect it to work. 😉

I was given these as gift and after I read a few negative and warning signs online I didnt ever use them, this was 4 years ago. I now see many mothers who use them and swear by them. I admit I was always scared with them being around their necks.

Thank you for sharing. I would be scared to put it around my child’s neck too.

You raise some very good points, I hadn't even heard of amber necklaces being used to help with teething, but as you said above, it seems to me to be quite a risk for the baby to possibly choke on them. I, personally, wouldn't do this, I think there are alternative-alternative options that don't pose such a risk.

This is a very interesting article, but I don’t think I would try using this. I am all for using alternative methods but, this one just doesn’t seem safe.

I used one with Eli with no problems. I took it off for sleeping (as they suggest) and bathing. You measure their neck to make sure you are getting the correct size so that it is not too snug, but it is not loose. Eli had no idea he was even wearing one and it was not snug to choke him or long enough to catch on things he was around and choke him. I checked it every time I took it off or put it on to make sure that nothing was failing on it. It did help. He had reflux and teething and it helped a little with both. I even bought myself an anklet because I had really bad reflux and it really did help. I will say I was concerned at first, and even speculative that it would help. I did research on them, found a trusted source that made authentic ones (there are companies out there that sell them that aren’t real amber so they really don’t work). Followed all the “rules” and suggestions, and like I said, made sure to get the proper size so it fit as it was suppose to. I would suggest giving them a try, just with anything, you need to follow the recommendations and check for flaws in product when using it with a baby.

Michelle, thank you for sharing your experience. I am glad that your baby was able to get relief from using an amber teething necklace. I am kinda curious if it would help my pain levels.

I’ve seen these necklaces more and more often and I have to admit that I feel the exact same way that you do. I’ve asked a few moms about them and they all seem very confident but since we don’t as a rule put necklaces on babies for the sake of accessorizing, I’m not sure why we would put them on for “medicinal” purposes. With so many alternatives to help deal with teething pain (frozen facecloths are a favourite around here) I just don’t think it’s worth the risk, no matter how small that risk may be.
