6 Ways to Save Money On You Child’s Clothing

Yard Sale

Buying clothing from a yard sale is a great way to save a ton of money on your child’s wardrobe. Simply check your local newspaper or Craigslist on Thursday or Friday night and search for garage sales in your area. Search for yard sales that mention kids clothing and circle them. If possible, make a list including the addresses and locations of the yard sale. Then come up with a game plan. You will have to get up early and get to the yard sale when they first open for the best selection. If you find clothes that you like but don’t feel the price is reasonable, try to negotiate with the seller.  Some sellers are willing to give you a huge discount if you buy clothes in bulk. I highly recommend that you set a target price for the items that you are planning on purchasing so that you don’t go over your budget for the day. Also, don’t be afraid to pick up items for other season or stock pile bigger sizes for your children.

Shop End of Season Sales/Clearance

I love finding a good bargain and will check out the items on clearance rack before I pay full price for clothing. If you plan on shopping clearance sales only, you will need to buy clothing at the end of the previous season and plan on buying the next size up for your child so that you have clothing for the next year. Some stores will mark down clothes before the end of the season to make room for new merchandise. Don’t be afraid to ask your favorite store to determine when they typically mark down clothing. Also, check back frequently as the stock might change or the store might have added new markdowns. If you clearance shop, you need to set a budget or a max price that you are willing to pay for an item . Then watch for sales that match your criteria and don’t forget to check for coupons (some stores allow you to use coupons on marked down items). If you find something on clearance that you really like, you might consider paying a bit more than you max price because if you wait too long it might disappear before it is marked down again.

Hand Me Downs

If you can find someone willing to give you their child’s old clothing, don’t be afraid to take them up on their offer. It is a great way to save money on clothes and you can continue passing them to people who need them once your child grows out of them. You can always purchase your child a few new outfits, especially, if the previous child was born in a different season when they were able to wear the clothes. For example, my son gets hand me downs and typically I have to add a few shorts or pants because the child was born a few months earlier. You can also find people who are giving away clothing on craigslist too.

Don’t be afraid to use a combination of these techniques when purchasing clothing for your children. You can easily fill your child’s closet/dresser for a faction of the cost if you are willing to spend a little bit of time to search for the deals and digging through the racks at consignment, thrift shops, clearance racks, and finding hand me downs.

Great post! Thanks for sharing this. It’s so silly to pay retail for kids’ clothes when they so often outgrow them before they get ruined!

I agree Brittany. I am thankful that I get most of my youngest son’s clothes from hand me downs. When I am finished with the clothes, I pass them on to my sister in law for her baby to wear. It works out great.

    Great tips!

I used to go to the Thrift Stores for the kids clothes when they were little, especially when they were home for summer school. They were going to outgrow and mess them up anyway so why pay a lot for something that won’t last, right?

I know plenty of moms who could use this, definitely passing it along.

Thank you for sharing Corina. I have gone to Goodwill for clothes for my oldest son. He is kinda clumsy and often comes home with holes in his jeans so I don’t like paying for expensive jeans. I am picky though when it comes to paying for items at Goodwill especially if its for a walmart or target brand. I also shop clearance racks as much as possible.
