Many Parents Dread Trimming Baby’s Finger and Toe Nails – I Did

Trimming a tiny baby’s finger nails is the hardest thing that you will have to do as a parent.  I know that I personally hated trimming my baby’s finger nails but it was something that I had to do so that my baby wouldn’t scratch their face all up.  Their nails are soft and very thin.  Also, with a squirmy baby it make it hard to trim as well.  It doesn’t get any easier as your baby gets older either, they learn to fight back by pulling their hand or toes away and can wiggle so much more.

If you accidentally cut your baby while trimming their nails, please don’t beat yourself up over it.  Almost everyone accidentally nicks their baby fingers or toes when they are trimming their nails.  I promise that your baby will not remember it after a few minutes.  Just try to control the bleeding with pressure and ice as needed, however, don’t put a band-aid on their finger.   A band aid poses a chocking risk to your baby.  It can accidentally come off their finger and if your baby puts it in his or her mouth, they could accidentally swallow it or choke.

Good advice. I was very nervous about cutting my first child’s nails. As an infant, I would wait until she was asleep to cut them. As she got older, maybe 8 – 10 months old, I found that the clipper fascinated her. So, I would hold her hand or foot up so she could see me cutting her nails. She would stay absolutely still, focusing on the clippers. After that day, I never had problems cutting her nails. I did the same for my son and he also responded the same way. To this day they love getting their nails clipped.

It does get easier when your baby gets older. Their nails aren’t as thin either.

I know I always dreaded it! I was always worried of clipping too far. I actually tried a few of the products you mentioned and they did make it easier and less stressful. I’m so glad someone came up with them!

I always used those tiny baby nail clippers.

I trim my son’s when he’s asleep. It’s the only time he won’t fight back!

Oh man, they come out with all the cool stuff AFTER my babies grow up. Dang nab it!

I used to wait until my kids were asleep before I nicked them with the clippers.

Thanks goodness they heal a lot faster than adults 🙂

It’s not too late to add more. Just think, we could have a baby shower allowing gifts of items invented 2013 or later! You’d be the hippest new mom out there.

Yes, they do seem to heal faster than we do. I know they come out with cool products even after my youngest was born. Not fair…lol.

I dreaded it too… so I made my hubby do it. He’s a doctor, so I was just putting all that education to practical, good use. 🙂
